The Adventures of Ruby - small red area on her foot

Postby JennyH » Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:12 pm

Hi Guys,

Please could someone recommend a (preventative) treatment for a small red spot on Ruby's foot.

I noticed yesterday when she raised her foot that there is a small area of redness on the pad. There is no sign of infection, a pus head or anything like that - I'm wondering if it is just a pressure spot?? She isn't limping or favouring her other leg, but I'm feeling that the foot in question is slightly warmer that the other one.

Whilst I have put branches of various sizes in her cage, the stand in the living room just has the one large wooden dowel perch and perhaps this is the cause of the redness as she spends a lot of time on this? Could I use some kind of ointment (Teatree/Alo Vera?) to ease the redness?

Regards,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
I've noticed exactly the same thing on my Sennie - Bob.
I've kept an eye on it but it doesn't appear to be getting any different and its certainly not causing him any discomfort.
I'd suggest you keep an eye on it as I do but I haven't found anything to concern me.
Damien.

Hi Damien,

Thanks for the response. Perhaps I'm overreacting as a new bird keeper but I just had to ask  I would hate my birdy girl to be suffering and not know it.

I'm on the internet every night and I think I've gone into information overload regarding CAGs. I find I'm peering at her poops, checking her feathers, her nostrils and food intake like a lunatic! lol.

Jenny

jenny it sounds like presure spots on her feet and like damien said just keep a eye on them....but just make sure you have cement or sandy perches in her cage as well as the natural one and that should harden up the feet

Thanks Hagan,

I have added a cement perch - Ruby's a bit afraid of it, it's bright green! Thanks for the advice... will do as advised and keep an eye.

Jenny,
I had the same problem - Bob wouldnt go near the perch so I moved it up near the top of his cage - natural instinct will hopefully kick in and like Bob, Ruby will want to be up there at the highest point. Might be worth a shot :tumbup
My perch is bright yellow by the way :smirk:
Bob is gradually eating his way through it :eh:

:tumbup Thanks for the giggle... Still chuckling and on my way to bed now. I'll try moving the perch tomorrow (Ruby might be miffed if I try it now! lol).

Good Night All.

Jenny, you mentioned aloe vera before, it has many uses & you could use it once twice a week to bathe Ruby :tumbup

Aloe vera is well known for its healing properties for everyday cuts and grazes for us humans & has been successfully used in the avian world as a natural source for various ailments.Aloe vera contains enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that can boost the immunity of birds & it's also believed the energy levels. It's widely used on birds that pluck .The aloe soothes skin and areas of feather plucking relieving the bird of pain and irritation. You need to source 100% natural aloe vera juice, it's usually available from local health shops. You spray/mist the aloe after a bath/shower,2/3 weeks. This will help to condition the feathers keeping them soft & healthy.

And a link on perches ...Hope this is of use

Thanks Tracy C.

I am so glad I joined this forum, I'd be lost without you all.

Will get some Aloe Vera tomorrow.

Regards,
Jenny

P.S.: Damien, I had a mad dream about Bob last night, he was trying to eat a giant yellow banana! Wonder what the dream readers will make of that one?
